Update on the Wilmington tunnel collapse: Los Angeles rescues at least 31 workers

UPDATE: According to NBC Los Angeles, which cited the Los Angeles Fire Department, a tunnel collapsed near Wilmington, a suburb of Los Angeles, California, resulting in the rescue of at least 31 workers. The event happened on Wednesday at about 8 p.m. At the building site, a crane was used to raise workers in groups of eight to the surface. There have been no reports of injuries.

“The City of Los Angeles has mobilized resources to the tunnel collapse in Wilmington,” Post by Mayor Karen Bass on X. “Over 100 LAFD responders, including teams from Urban Search and Rescue, have been sent out. We appreciate everyone who is responding to this disaster right away.




The Los Angeles County Sanitation District commissioned the $630.5 million Los Angeles Effluent Outfall Tunnel project, which is where the collapse occurred, according to CBS News.

According to the website of the project’s principal contractor, Flatiron Dragados, the tunnel is seven miles long, around 18 feet in diameter, and 450 feet below the surface.

According to reports, the business plans to finish the wastewater management project by 2027.

According to July 2024 Los Angeles County Sanitation Department documents that CBS News was able to secure, tunneling was expected to be finished this year.



ORIGINAL STORY: A tunnel collapsed near Wilmington, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, according to a report from the Los Angeles Fire Department on Wednesday. The tunnel may be found close to the intersection of S. Figueroa Street and W. Lomita Boulevard.

According to a statement from LAFD, 15 tunnel workers were stranded. No injuries have been reported as of yet.

Up to 15 tunnel workers were first reported to have been cut off by a “collapse” in an industrial tunnel that was six miles south of the response location, which is the only tunnel access, and had an unknown depth or width. “There are no confirmed injuries,” the LAFD stated in the statement.

Details about the tunnel’s size and the cause of the collapse are still unknown.
